Daniel,  It is totally Possible.I partnered up with a co worker. we both wanted to look into real estate investing Buy and holds.  

I've been thinking about if I should purchase a co-op or condo to start so that I can better understand property investment or might it be better to start buying rental properties first and then find a space for myself once I have more capital?

I appreciate that information getting a co signer might be a good option to keep the down payment cheaper
