If the scope of work is such that your municipality requires a permit (and therefore inspections) then you may need a GC or a "licensed" pro such as a plumber or electrician.

Be prepared to pay $75 to an electrician to flip a tripped breaker or change a ceiling light bulb, $75 to a plumber to change a flapper in a toilet or a cartridge in a faucet, $750 to replace a hot water tank, fridge, washer/dryer, $100 to a cable/internet tech to unplug and plug in a modem, the list goes on.

Once you start removing walls and drywall/plaster, you’re dealing with electricians, plumbers, carpenters, drywall, painters, etc etc etc. some people dive right in... but there’s way more opportunity for issues overruns and who knows what else.
