But, from reading the forums I get the impression that many who go down that road are doing so because they think it's the "easiest and fastest" way to break into REI.

I️ feel that it’s one of the best, safest, and fastest ways to build yourself into retirement if you are willing to put in the work to get to that point.

Expect a slow process; all those things leading to a FICO in the 500s will need to be worked through, and the lenders going down that low aren't necessarily the fastest and most efficient.
