We have family in Europe who have the cassette type mini splits, but they are in a considerably drier climate. 

If you have issues with places to run the ducting, then the choice is obvious.....The newer typical ducted systems are also very efficient and keep the whole house cool/warm so there is that in really cold climates....Choose the one that is cheapest and easiest for you to install, either one should last 30 years with regular maintenance....

PS is hard on a good day (most restrictions in the US), impossible in the current climate.

Does anyone here know how much additional cost I am looking at by adding a climate control system to this project, and is climate control really necessary?

Mountain biking, hiking, climate, fishing, boating, peaceful mountains, etc...I hope to retire in an over 55 community in East Tennessee.
