This is for the tax-shielding purposes.I would try not to do less than $50k, only because normal custodial fees can wipe out anywhere from 0.5-1% of your return.

I would have paid that out in custodial fees with no access to the funds and I wouldn't have been able to add my sweat equity.

Compared to an IRA, Solo 401k contribution limits are much higher and there is no custodial requirement as you can be your own trustee.
