I lived in New Mexico for a number of years and can appreciate your sentiments—I love adobe homes but it’s easy to overdose on them in communities where the prevailing aesthetics (and zoning) lead even McDonalds and Wal-Mart to adapt and appropriate the style (but, at the very least, these are still major improvements over their traditional facades).

For a more industrial area, you'd likely see businesses and tradesmen storing materials, but in terms of quickly adding value to an existing self storage facility, we've been able to "dress" these converted units up - with paint and positioning - so they nearly blended into the existing facades.

I can see leaving as much of the old stud as possible because the facade is attached to it (and it provides more surface area for interior wall hangings), but I prefer a continuous stud from the top plate to the bottom plate.

Annapolis is a bit trickier and is one where I don't know the particulars of the market as well.I've done some commercial leasing myself as a courtesy when renovating several floors of high rise building space for a property owner and have done commercial tenant improvement work including consulting on build out portion of leases for almost 15 years.I'm in the clear on facade as there is no historical code in the area , though I'm matching the existing historical buildings as it's at little cost to me to do so.
