I dont know San Deigo all that well  but I suspect a 450k sfr is not all that spiffy but a 450k condo might be pretty nice.For 450k in say SF south to Gilroy on the West side of the bay.. you cant buy ANYTHING for that low of price Nothing basically.Move up to Seattle and same thing prices are not as high as SF  but still way up there.Portland where we work is one of the better bang for the buck west coast area but still Median price is 400k or more you can buy dogs in the worst part of town for 200k or so.. those same homes that most folks in the mid west buy would be 20k so you can kind of see where they are coming from its just hard for them to compute  vis a vi for rental purposes anyway.
