I think what makes these places attractive for investors besides the prices, of course, is that you can get to major tourist attractions like Disney or Bush Gardens in just about the same amount of time. 

The reality I ran into was that a rural homestead, assuming you're not living like the Amish, depends on tools and equipment, and equipment breaks down, and you can't grow equipment parts in the garden.
