It's not uncommon that people rely onnthe knowledge and advice of the vendor (GC in this case) to steer them in the right direction. 

Almost anybody can, but they also need to learn to steer and brake.

@Cody Warhurst, for what it is worth, I would probe more for why they are saying to steer clear?  

Sometimes, housing providers try to disguise their discrimination by giving false information about availability of housing, either saying that nothing was available or steering homeseekers to certain areas based on race.

That is when I realized that the weaker offer was from buyers represented by an agent from the same brokerage as my agent and that my agent had been able to steer the buyers to his preferred lender.

I've gained a ton of new insight that has helped steer me in a good direction.

I have seen markets where inventory was low, the market was hot, lots of demand, etc, and those houses still seemed to do ok, but generally, they are affected somewhat.You get more noise nuisances, pollution, crime potential, possibly less street parking availability, etc, and many buyers steer clear for those reasons.

Steer clear.Chance are an IRS agent is reading this since this is a public forum and they might be interested in who this contractor is.
