They'll just not pay rent and get away with it in Cali.

If your location is more of a quick get-away, then 7-day min may not fill in as well. 

The truth is, you don't have the intent to occupy this home year-round as a primary residence, but you do have the intent to occupy it for a portion of the year (during ski season).A primary residence is a place you plan to live for pretty much year-round.

Bali’s Airbnb market is pretty hot, especially with the strong tourist demand year-round.

I'm buying in Portugal because rates are far lower, occupancy is higher year round. :) However it takes a lot more out of pocket cash than it does in the US.
