First that by "spray foam insulation" you are referring to the application of closed cell, medium density foam and, second, by "normal" insulation you are referring to the more traditional fibreglass or mineral wool batt insulation.The first difference is in R/RSi factor of the insulation.

It's not unlike a property with a title issue - if you don't clearly own the land and/or it's mineral rights, you shouldn't expect to take anything from it.I'd say your example about weaving a basket isn't necessarily a fair comparison, because the product that you're creating wouldn't have been generated from the dirt beneath your feet (i.e. - your basket isn't growing out of the ground - which is HOA property), whereas the produce of the garden would be.
