This was due to desirability, affordability, limited supply due to geography and laws protecting open space coupled with very high demand due to net in-migration of high-earners/wealthy people, and perhaps most importantly a diverse job market in recession-proof sectors like education, government, defense, healthcare, etc. not just tech, energy or manufacturing that can be boom/bust. 

I only had a real problem 1 time during those 25 years when I ended up with a full house (22 guests) and two of the rooms were from a different culture that stayed up late into the night and ended up annoying the other guests stomping around and making noise.

People kill their baby money soldiers too soon, and they kill them by spending them on luxuries, like you describe.To me, it comes down to mindsets, the poor, the middle class and the wealthy mindset.

This is a wealthy retirement community where 80% of owners hardly blink at the special assesment.

I told him he might as well accept it as it is or go back to Florida as that's just the culture. 

In our culture, the idea of fast food and convenience is everywhere so what seems "easier" could actually be disguised to harm you healthwise.By just taking out some time in the day to plan and prepare for a healthier lifestyle will do wonders in the long run.
