We have looked at properties in the winter with cardboard in the windows that nobody is fixing.  

If it is a good quality unit they probably won't like looking at cardboard either.

If your signs are just regular cardboard then obviously water will destroy them.

@J Scott  agreed on the area.. most low end areas I have seen  when I look at that video and Ned I assume that was Ned leading the charge.. was able to remove a plastic pane and some card board and walk in and the persons belongs are still there..
