The oil company now owns the subsurface rights to that property (one of the property's appurtenances) and can transfer or keep them as they wish.

Note I am sure investors could make money in Detroit, but historically it has declining population and has long term appreciation that has not kept up with inflation (1.87% annual appreciation for this century).I recognize the post was done in part to indicate Detroit has some decent near term appreciation which may be a surprise as it is considered a cash flow market and not really to make a claim about its long term appreciation.However, I thought I would provide some clarity to the thread (again not saying investors cannot make money in Detroit) from a relaible source that many RE investors are familiar with (I always reference it when I am looking into new markets - My current purchase NeighborhoodScout projects 30% appreciation over the next 3 years (It would be nice if their forecast is accurate)).Best wishes
