No matter how great the property or location, if you don't have a great, trustworthy property manager, you've bought yourself a big job.

A good place to start would be reading David Greene's book "Long-Distance Real Estate Investing".Major part of long distance investing is setting up a very good and trustworthy team (agents, PMs, lenders, etc.).

Do they seem trustworthy and knowledgeable?

For out-of-state stuff, I have a hard time because I don't know which areas, contractors, and property managers are good and trustworthy. 

The first and most important thing would to make sure they're trustworthy.

We do know other support people in town, but he was trustworthy and exceptional, and that is hard to find.
