I love the way Simon Sinek describes this in his book "Leaders Eat Last".

If you read any of the Lewis and Clark Expedition writings, you will see they discovered the Native Americans were fighting fiercely, tribe to tribe.Whether people came to the North American Continent via a land bridge from Asia or via a ship from Europe, everyone "migrated" here for a number of reasons, food, escaping an enemy, more freedom, all encompassed in the word HOPE.The Europeans treated the resident Native Americans a LOT better than they treated those that were here before them.

I suggest you read some of the early papers of the atheist CS Lewis and read the progression of his beliefs over time.
