I'm suspecting that your profession was similar to mine back then.There was no point in buying a cash flow property as any income was going to be taxed at my highest marginal rate.I bought Properties that would appreciate but were also cash flow neutral (in other words, zero cash flow).HOWEVER, because I am in a highly appreciating market, Brooklyn, NY., every year the rents went up and I wind up paying a lot of taxes because of it.
