That means that unless you can readily identify the receptacle at the end of that daisy-chain to start from, you might see one in the middle as being bad when it is one further along in the chain.Now, when Bill mentioned "to see if the circuit is in phase", I would venture a guess that he means that the black (hot) and white (neutral) might not be properly connected in any of the receptacles along the daisy chain, so that when equipment gets energized in, the GFCI ends up tripping.
