Maybe they were talking about ethernet ports which is too fancy for a rental?  

I looked into it and it seems a low voltage contractor can run a Ethernet cord upstairs to install a access point so that my tenet can have better Wifi. 

They don't need batteries, they get Power over Ethernet (POE).

For small buildings it's been easiest to just put a decent router (we've been using ubiquiti's edgemax routers) and switch in a communal closet and then drop ethernet ports to each living room via cat6.

The market changed suddenly and drastically.Now the 1-bedroom sky-high student rentals downtown with the grudging service are hurting while the students six miles out are discovering it's much nicer living over a handyman on call who obligingly wires their apartment for ethernet.
