Sure, just like a placebo, pre-paying my mortgage could end up as a pointless “financial sugar pill,” but at the end of the day I didn’t care.

I agree with the advice above, you should consider a fourplex over a duplex for a house hack as you will optimize your 1st mortgage, it also makes vacancy an easier pill to swallow.
