It's obviously a mixed bag. 

He should retract it and go back to the $150 to send a strong message that trying to take advantage of his generosity will not be rewarded.He obviously has handled the situation very poorly by making a offer in the first place but now he must take back control of the situation and make it very clear that it is $150 or nothing and they can pack their bags.

Aloha Dirk,  Like in most places,  Hawaii has a mix bag of contractors from really good reasonably  priced ones to dirt cheap shady ones that do shoddy work that could lead to fire (bad electrical work) or health issues (mold) for tenants.

But don’t squander a huge portion of it on a depreciating asset (think sports car, jewelry, etc).  

Stop hanging out with your deadbeat buddies that spend all day drinking, talking sports, and otherwise wasting away.

Whoever does, will be a punching bag for the rest as prices are NEVER low enough for owners.Who's going to get the proper license(s)?
