Some of that really early insulated wiring is kinda trash--the insulation gets brittle and disintegrates, which is (to put it mildly) not the best, but that's not what he's saying. 99% chance you either misunderstood or he is lying.The bathrooms have mold because they're damp.

The air doesn't circulate as much throughout the floors of the building with his heating system, because there's no big blower fan sucking much of the air up out of the basement and shooting it out the registers on the first and second floors on a regular basis.So when damp or humid air gets down in that basement, it stays down there.
