It's the thing I dreaded about moving from NYC where taxes aren't based on recent sales price, to CA where they are. it was unavoidable but at least, yeah, i bought 100k UNDER market value as squatters were living in the house after the old couple living had passed on and left to their next of kin who just apparently let the property go for a number of years to squatters' destruction.
