Caulk isn't used to patch drywall because it is very soft when it dries. 

Instead they've somehow been brainwashed into rinse-dry-repeat formulas that lack foresight.

BTW Denver requires a permit for pretty much anything from 1/2 a sheet of dry wall and with the new lead regulations you should pretty much assume that ANY work will require a permit and plan accordingly.
