With Michigan having harsh winters you really only make money 5 months out of the year with STRs.

I suppose for me the risk aversion comes from being 1800+ miles away and the age of the homes in a place with harsh winters.

My current home has gone up in price from $70,000 to $165,000 it is located close to chemical industries it will be rented for around $1,100 I do not plan on returning I'm 48 years old and widowed in a few years I am planning on living with one of my grown kids. 

I know this probably sounds harsh, but not nearly as harsh as the lesson you will likely receive if you carry out your plan.

btw I was not trying to be critical or overly harsh like it sounded just trying to make a point that there may be more effective methods of accomplishing your goals.
