I'm not sure how big of an uphill battle I have ahead, but from my experience renting I'm sure it will be a steep one..

You can probably learn everything you'd need to know for free on here and blogs, and definitely everything you'd need to know by spending under $250 on Amazon.Unfortunately, if you don't have a lot of money yourself I would say NYC is going to be a VERY uphill battle at best, and most likely you won't be able to invest here. 

It's probably a lot cheaper for you to help the property manger to keep the place bug free and clean for a few more months than it is to have a court battle with an uncertain outcome.  

I realize it may be an ongoing battle to pursue low-income, but there are ways to track anyone down to levy or garnish -
