My macro goal with REI is to supplement my retirement income in 10-15 years and (potentially) build a business I can pass down one day.

But I did not get a supplemental tax bill, so all was well.So, I can absolutely guarantee that a Trust will NOT save you from this new proposition. 

That said you might be better off with a window unit as supplemental. 

I did it with single family but decided to rent out a bedroom to supplement my income even more.

While earning monthly rental income from a single property is a great income supplement, making money from multiple properties is the only way to gain financial independence and retire early, and that's what most investors aspire to.The key, of course, is to invest in a location which promises higher return than your current market.

I know it's not truly an apples to apples comparison but where interest rates are at, having roommates is critical to supplementing the mortgage and lowering your living expense. 

I ended up with a non-finance, valley job and supplemented my smaller income with real estate.
