Installing vinyl over the outside isnt a huge process, just nailer strips and the fan fold insulation goes between, would really pretty up the outside.

If you're talking a forced-air gas unit, you can buy a 95% efficiency, 100K BTU furnace for about $1000, a 2-ton, 13 SEER compressor for about $1000, and coil for for about $300 -- which should be fine for a 1000 sf house.

If they are paying utilities I wouldn't go with coil- op, looks like you have already reached that conclusion.I would leave the appliances there as a courtesy, but make sure they know you aren't going to replace them.
