I accepted it the first time but then rejected it after that and plainly told him it wasn't professional to accept gifts from tenants when I'm working for the Landlord because it could create a conflict of interest.

Plainly put, getting your tenant to pay any share of this replacement would be at best a grasping move for a professional landlord.You also clearly have never learned the first thing about replacing a 240V electrical appliance like a range or an electrical dryer.
