I have heard some people setting up their heating cooling system to shutoff if a door or window is let open for a certain amount of time.You can also add a temperature offset to make it look like it is a few degrees cooler or warmer than actual since sometimes temp setting is a mental thing.

Put up a little sign by the thermostat that explains that running the air conditioner at a low temperature in a humid environment will cause any central air unit to freeze.

Either the hot water heater is on the verge of failing or someone turned down the temperature at which the gas or electricity kicks in to reheat the water.
