I'm of a similar notion as Andrew; make sure you thoroughly document the status of the interior (photos, video, etc) and make sure that your actions are compliant with your state landlord-tenant laws; sounds like you've given enough time as far as providing notice and when the police were able to enter the unit as part of that eviction process, you have to now look into storing the prior tenant's items in a way that is in accordance with local abandoned property laws.
