yes  at least in most states you must work as an agent for a few years then you can take the brokers exam... although there was a post on BP about challenging the CA brokers exam straight away but that 0pportunity sunset according to the postAnd specifically not necessarily a company but you must hang your license with a broker who will supervise your activies it can be a broker who works from home does not have to be a company per se
