Costa Rica does make a good portion of their income from tourism so there is some effect going on.

This is going to negatively impact the tourism.

The town thrives on tourism. 

It's a bit of a different story between "vacation/relaxation/nature/sports" spots and "holiday/tourism" places. 

These are not dirty words-- embrace them.While it’s most important to be happy, however you choose to run your business, I personally believe this behavior also maximizes profits.

The greatest cultural weakness of this city, in my view, is that the residents refuse to change and let go and embrace new things.

To elaborate on @Lucas Carl's point - cities/towns that are driven by tourism are inherently more friendly to the STR market, as a large part of their economy is already driven by vacation rentals.  

You are just embracing a different phase of your life.

While it will always be dependent on tourism, Las Vegas can attract more than just high rollers and gamblers now.
