Attend your local REI meet-ups and try to find someone who is currently house-hacking or has house-hacked in the past to learn from their experience.

House Hacking is a good route to get started. 

Honestly, why would anyone do that when the median house price of NYC is almost 1 million.

I would like to pull out equity from the homes to build either a house on each or an ADU (they are zoned multi-family) depending what makes the most sense on returns and what is feasible.

I am not even sure if the villages offers this type of real estate in which we could “house hack”.

New here to the forum and I am currently looking to invest in Ohio for the purpose of providing section 8 housing. 

Of the many strategies I've looked into, House-hacking and short-term rentals piqued my interests. 

The only reason conventional will not allow it at all is if you do not have a current housing expense.
