I used to live in Portland OR but ended up moving to Columbus OH to start with real estate investing.

We like markets in the midwest and southern US, including Houston, Dallas, Fort Worth, Phoenix, Columbus (OH), Tulsa and others.

I started with a house hack myself when I moved from Portland OR to Columbus OH.

Columbus could be another option with better metrics for long-term appreciation, but the cash flow will be tighter compared to Cleveland. 

Soon, there will be a ton of posts below from agents in Columbus and Cleveland to "help" you, but you already know where you want to be.I wouldn't be thinking STR for Ohio unless you are doing woodsy, which can work, but the table stakes are high on those (swimming holes, saunas, game rooms, hot tubs).

I can only speak to our market here in Columbus, but MTR is in such demand that I don't see this amenity being a must to keep your occupancy high, I'd go with an outlet.
