@Michael James The tax is certainly high in many areas especially west and southwest of the city. 

My business partner and I grew up in a small town in southwest Michigan centralized between Kalamazoo, Battle Creek, and Grand Rapids and always looked at the "big" cities as a place of unlimited opportunity. 

Ryan, I am initially focusing close to home in the South, Southwest suburbs and NW Indiana.

Southwest Chicago housing stock and businesses is almost a doppleganger of northwest side areas, but cheaper due to higher minority (usually latino) presence and general North side snobbery.
