Look at it as your crock pot fund of wealth. 

Then there are local ordinances that require park benches and raised islands with trees and shrubs, sidewalks and other beautification requirements. 

Not only has STR gotten saturated with supply, but valuations have gone crazy in some markets because everyone sees the "STR" pot at the end of the rainbow.

So with that same pot of money you'll be able to hypothetically buy 12 instead of 9 properties (just to make up numbers).
