The typical rent collection sites are not what I'm looking for. 

Appreciation is unlikely, and selling later may be tough.Challenges of an Out-of-Area RentalLess control over tenants & maintenance.Emergency costs (travel, major repairs).Harder to sell if the area declines further.Better Approach?

One thing you might think of doing is having and promoting your own website to avoid the exhorbitant fees charged by the third party sites such as Expedia, Booking.com and Air BnB.

Travel isn't easy or direct for me to anywhere- though the excuse to visit somewhere warm is always tempting during the winter!!

When I think of Blythe, CA travel centers, gas stations and fast food chains come to mind.
