I am assuming that your home is a detached single family house, irrespective of the island or neighborhood, I think you should hang on to it, as real estate in Hawaii only goes up.

A combination of lack of infrastructure partnered with historic highs in population growth specifically in new international students pouring into the area to attend Cape Breton University, has presented less then a 1% vacancy rate on the island. 

Being 1.5hrs of NYC gives you a lot of options, even Long Island (which typically has more options for public commute into NYC).Give me a shout if you'd like to chat more, I have a handful of case studies on my site as well from deals I've closed/brokered that match the househacking criteria you're aiming for.
