@Tom Jimenez@Ramon Fyffe and Account Closed are referring to taking a participant loan from your 401k so that you can purchase real estate as opposed to actually investing your 401k into real estate.Lots of folks here on BP - service providers wanting to sell plans with the lure of "easy cash" and people who are simply investors - promote the participant 401k loan as a great kick-start for investing in real estate.  

You completely ignore the option of small amount of leverage and the ability to use small amounts of leverage to kick-start your investing.I won't waste the time doing it here myself, but I would recommend that you sit down one day and run an analysis of the ROI benefits of 20-30% leverage; then compare those benefits to the risk of *only* having 70-80% equity in your properties.

At that price tag, there are typically 5-10 names that come up.It's not the only way, but it is a sure way to kickstart your knowledge and network.

You can become a real estate agent for under $1,500 and that includes some advertising money for a kick start. 

Having sold ~44 million, this book is pretty widely credited to be what kickstarted many peoples real estate investing journeys (including mine). 

It could be the genesis that really kick starts some good real estate investing.
