If you have but few thousand dollars to invest and don’t want to or are unable to commit to the “apprenticeship” route, I would suggest either purchasing a small property with owner carryback financing (not easy) or studying the publicly traded real estate securities market (mainly REITs) and investing in some selected REITs then following all the information made available about the REITs operations, property acquistion and disposal, property leasing, debt financing, etc.  

There is no way to be able to evaluate, appraise, analyze and recognize deals/investments without experience and knowledge gained through education and apprenticeship.  

My plan is to get a college degree, start an apprenticeship as an electrician, and start building a rental portfolio.

Electricians, Plumbers and Elevator repair all require apprenticeship. 

I am thinking about reaching out to a construction company or even a handyman to be a mentor or take apprenticeship/assistant (I have seen some companies and handyman working on the weekends) so that I can learn the basics.

A good job that stems from education, whether it's college or a trade school or an apprenticeship is in order.
