Not sure if the answer isa) nothing I can do about it, b) put a wireless water meter to help detect leaks on it (how does this work for a rental where the internet is theirs?)

The Nest thermostats are designed to work over a wireless network so they can be remotely changed, but there would be nothing stopping you from installing one without using it wirelessly and just using it as a regular thermostat.

Aside from all of this, then why not just buy a plug in wireless doorbell????? 

All my units are in A/B class neighborhoods with 95% of my tenants in healthcare - nurses/Doctors and all my units are wirelessly controlled with security system, wireless door locks...

In the case of any power outages, the reconnection to the wireless network is not as reliable as being hardwired. 

I listen to all of the above using regular over the ear wireless headphones.

It's all well and good and groovy to have a smart refrigerator or wireless security system...until those devices/systems offer up every little bit of personal & private information available on the IT systems they are connected to.
