When the bank takes the property to foreclosure it goes to what's called a foreclosure auction at which point anyone can bid on the property and the bank can set a minimum strike price (typically however much they are owed).

You can add a security strike plate to the existing door & frame with 4" screws that go into the studs which helps tremendously and is pretty cheap.
