One thing I do: I will press the little + symbol on a post that I like, and that makes good sense and isn't just BS.

Add in some numeral and a punctuation symbol - and you satisfy the password cracking difficulty while still being memorable.

Type the @ symbol and then the first three letters of their name.

(Unless someone setup their profile name that way) Type the @ symbol and start typing the name.

Maybe consider a key symbol from the seal (county bird, or color or something) and implement that instead.

@John S.John, if you type the “@“ symbol, then without any spaces start spelling the name of the person you want to respond to you’ll see their name in a pop down menu, simply select them.
