@Jack B. if you have not already you might consider confirming with the painter that the price includes (or excludes ceilings), and if it also includes patching/texture of any settling cracks/holes in the wall. 

I needed to clarify @Mindy Jensen, let me try it again; would the cost to skim coat and texture a circular pattern like this, cost the same as removing a popcorn ceiling, about $3,000 to $4,000 depending on size of house? 

Thus, if you're going to go for unique, I would recommend either (a) spending little and doing much of the work yourself, or perhaps better, (b) making a property unique by modular enhancements.

I am thinking of using textured faux stucco with a brown-yellow paint to complement wood trim and restraining the floors so that the style is uniform.
