I have no idea how an advisor can, in good faith,  look someone straight in the eyes and tell them that now would be a good time to put money into an investment that could lose 35-40% tomorrow (2000-2001, 2007/8).

As I'm sure you're aware you can respond to any guest comments, but my advice would be to just rise above it the best that you can in those comments don't get defensive, be kind - understanding - and stick to the facts and even mention the heat wave/black out potential.
