I've also got a background in the biological sciences.

I ran the Transunion SmartMove background check with credit report, criminal history, and eviction report and it came back clean, but had to reject two other applicants after their SmartMove scores came back low for low credit scores and numerous pre-eviction filings at local courts.  

Background in building and owned prop mgmt company.

You'd essentially be losing 2% on the spread, not to mention that technically your amortization includes some principle, which means that your second month, you will earn slightly less, and the 3rd month slightly less, etc., causing your negative spread to be even greater.On the other hand, you could try to pick funds or stocks that yield higher and capture the spread.  

My background is in technology (first as a programmer and now as manager) and my wife's background is in finance and accounting.  

They were a little young, but both were college-educated, well-spoken and very confident they would pass the background and income verification check.

But after speaking to mentors and brokers, I realize that I need to strengthen my background and experience before I am taken seriously when I ask for a seat at the table.  

I have almost zero background in real estate other than I've recently purchased a house (before finding BP) and I've started to educate myself via BP posts/blogs, podcasts, and reading recommended books.
