You'll want it sprayed and if painter is good, he may be able to mist coat and flood as he goes and get enough coverage to not need primer or two coats.

Spray the entire area with weed killer/round up (I mix it double strength).  

Just tape it and mud as usual and it will be fine after new texture is sprayed.
