I'm a pretty liberal person but when I see things like this it just makes me shake my head.

I'm on the liberal side of moderate, and still try to help people, but I've been taken advantage of more times than I can count (though I do stop once this happens- it's better to take a chance on people as some will appreciate it.

Being in the Austin area you need to understand that Travis county JP courts are going to be liberal so judges are going to be more inclined to listen to the tenants sob story.
