Cracking should stop at the mid point of the beam (that's where the concrete goes from tension to compression in most cases).

So although folks may be leaving the state, there's still solid demand and limited supply, and that tension is what dictates the local RE market and its prices, not one-off stories about folks packing up and heading to other states (which is happening, but it's clearly not impacting RE here).

So many people are hung up on the word "forced" as taking it as a gun to the head which I don't believe the OP is meaning but more speaking to that his family is very insistent on it and saying no will hurt them a lot and may even bring a lot of tension to their relationship.
